The Plain of Gennesaret, from Khân Minyeh. The town of Tiberias in the distance, and Mejdel (Magdala) on the right, at the southern extremity of the plain

The plains of Esdraelon from the heights above El Mahrakah, looking towards the south-east. In the distance, in a central position, the village of Zerîn (Jezreel), with its white castle, is easily distinguished. On the left rises Jebel Duby (Little Hermon), and on the right are the mountains of Gilboa.

El Mahrakah, the place of Elijah's sacrifice. At the south-eastern point of the range of Carmel. In the foreground is the green knoll called Tell el Kassîs (the Hill of the Priests), close to which the Kishon flows.

The plain El Markeiyeh. At the mouth of Wâdy Taiyebeh, looking south and south-east towards the mountains of the Serbál group. The plain takes its name from the long white range of chalk hills called El Markhâ.

The Southern end of the Dead Sea from Engedi. Showing the peninsula called El Lisân (the tongue) which may easily be mistaken for an island.

The citdel of Saida, the ancient Sidon. Now called Kul'at el Mezzeh. It stands on the south-eastern extremity of the town, on a heap of rubbish in which layers of the purple shell are still visible.

Sur'ah, the ancient Zorah. The birthplace of Sampson. It is five miles south of Latrôn, on a conical hill on the north side of the Wâdy es Sur'ar (The valley of Sorek).

A Bedouin of the Haurân. Bedouins (more correctly Bedawîn) occupy the north-west district of the Haurân; the plain is inhabited by peasants, and the Druses for many centuries have colonised the mountain range

The most easterly source of the Jordan, Bâniâs (Cæsarea Philippi). This place has justly been called a Syrian Tivoli. The cliff is of ruddy limestone mingled with basalt. On a platform of the rock stands the wely of Sheikh Khidr (Saint George)

The southern expanse of the plain of Esdraelon, from Jenîn. The whole extent of the plain is now called Merj ibn Amîr (the Meadow of the Son of Amîr)
