The river Kishon from El Mahrakah. The place of Elijah's sacrifice. A Bedawîn encampment in the foreground, and the hills of Galilee in the distance beyond a forest of oak-trees.

The site of Laish, afterwards called Dan, the ancient northern limit of the Holy Land, at the most westernly source of the Jordan. This spot is now known as Tell el Kâdy (the Hill of the Judge), and here stands a sacred oak hung with votive offerings, with a tomb dedicated to Sheikh Merzûk.

The citdel of Saida, the ancient Sidon. Now called Kul'at el Mezzeh. It stands on the south-eastern extremity of the town, on a heap of rubbish in which layers of the purple shell are still visible.

The plain El Markeiyeh. At the mouth of Wâdy Taiyebeh, looking south and south-east towards the mountains of the Serbál group. The plain takes its name from the long white range of chalk hills called El Markhâ.

The city of Acre (Akka) from the north. Mount Carmel is seen in the distance, beyond the bay. Muslim cemetary and aqueduct in the foreground.

Eshdûd, the ancient Ashdod. Called by the Greeks Azotus. The modern village stands on the slope of a hill, one hundred feet above the sea, and three miles from the shore. The green knoll in the foreground is crowned by the wely of Sheikh Ibrahim el Matbûk.

Valley of the Nile and pyramids. From Mount Mukattam. Beyond the picturesque cluster of the "Tomb of the Memlûks" we see the ancient aqueduct stretching across the mounds of rubbish which form the southern moundary of Cairo.

The southern expanse of the plain of Esdraelon, from Jenîn. The whole extent of the plain is now called Merj ibn Amîr (the Meadow of the Son of Amîr)

Ruins of Ashkelon, from the South-west. Here there is a shallow bay, with a landing-place for small boats. The beach is strewn with masses of ancient masonry. On the cliff above there is a Mohammadan shrine, called El Khudrah, with a few palm trees near it.

El Mahrakah, the place of Elijah's sacrifice. At the south-eastern point of the range of Carmel. In the foreground is the green knoll called Tell el Kassîs (the Hill of the Priests), close to which the Kishon flows.
