The rock-hewn amphitheatre, Petra. Thirty-three tiers of seats rise one above the other, and above the seats there are chambers hewn in rock. The brook of 'Ain Mûsa, bordered with verdure, flows across the arena.

Rock-cut tomb or temple, Petra. Eighty-five feet in height. It is called by the Arabs El Khuzneh Far'on, 'The treasures of Pharoah,' which is said to be concealed in the urn-shaped finial at the summit. The portal leads into a lofty chamber twelve yards square.

Stone tablet or altar: an offering represented within a border of Hieroglyphics, found in a tomb at Thebes. Discovered by the Earl of Belmore, 1818. Same size as the original.

Shoshone Falls, Snake River, Idaho. Main fall, 210 feet from upper to lower level; height of cañon walls at the falls, 1,000 feet. A number of minor falls, islands, and boulder rocks among the main falls add beauty to the lonely majesty of this scene.

The large stone in the quarry, Ba'albek called the Hajr el Hûbla. It is sixty-eight feet four inches in length. On the under side it is cut away all round, remaining attached to the bed of the rock in the middle along its entire length.

Detached tombs, Petra. Isolated masses of rock, from fifteen to twenty feet square. In one of them there is a small sepulchral chamber. The background represents the excavations in the cliffs opposite to the amphitheatre.
