Nathaniel Hawthorne was an American novelist, dark romantic, and short story writer of the 19th century. He is best known for his novels "The Scarlet Letter" (1850) and "The House of Seven Gables" (1851), and for a collection of short stories called "Twice-Told Tales" (1837). His work often explores themes of guilt, sin, and redemption, and he is considered to be one of the greatest American authors of the 19th century. Hawthorne's writing is characterized by its psychological complexity, symbolic content, and allusions to Puritanism. He was a contemporary of Herman Melville and a friend of Ralph Waldo Emerson.
