New York City directories are books that list the names and addresses of residents, businesses, and other organizations in New York City. They can be useful for genealogical research, as well as for finding information about the history of a particular neighborhood or business. City directories were often published annually and were similar to phone books, although they often contained additional information such as the occupation of the listed individuals. The first New York City directory was published in 1786 and directories have been published continuously since then. Some early city directories have been digitized and are available online through libraries and other institutions, while others can be found in physical form at libraries or archives.
