In Nordamerika charakterisierte der Begriff Loyalist Kolonisten, die die Amerikanische Revolution zugunsten eines Verbleibs im britischen Empire ablehnten. Zu den amerikanischen Loyalisten gehörten königliche Beamte, anglikanische Geistliche, wohlhabende Kaufleute mit Verbindungen nach London, demobilisierte britische Soldaten und Neuankömmlinge (insbesondere aus Schottland) sowie viele gewöhnliche Kolonisten, die von Natur aus konservativ waren und / oder das Gefühl hatten, der Schutz Großbritanniens sei notwendig. Kolonisten mit loyalistischen Sympathien machten schätzungsweise 15 bis 20% der weißen Kolonialbevölkerung der damaligen Zeit aus, verglichen mit jenen, die als "Patrioten" beschrieben wurden und etwa 40-50% der Bevölkerung ausmachten. Dieses hohe Maß an politischer Polarisierung veranlasst Historiker, zu argumentieren, dass die Amerikanische Revolution sowohl ein Bürgerkrieg als auch ein Unabhängigkeitskrieg von der britischen Krone war.
