The printer, Anthoine Vérard, kneeling center, presents his book to the king of France, Charles VIII (1492). Behind Vérard, Josephus (died circa 93 CE), holding a scroll with his name on it to identify him as the author, looks on approvingly. Behind Josephus, a scene of mayhem typical of The Jewish War plays itself out. In the foreground, a mounted King Charles enters Paris, and, center right, Charles's servants hold his horse while he receives the book from Vérard.
