The fallen statue of Rameses II at Memphis.  The soft mud in which it is embedded has perfectly preserved the well-cut features and all the front part of the figure.  During about eight months of the year it is partly covered by the waters of the overflowing Nile.

The western wall was about twelve hundred feet in length and followed the lines of the edge of the cliffs which are from thirty to seventy feet in height.
