Mosque of the Tekîyeh, or Hospice of the Sultan Selim.  Its position is shown in the illustration on page 381. The court is planted with walnut-trees. The cloisters and interior of the mosque are decorated with exceedingly fine glazed tiles.

In the distance, in a central position, the village of Zerîn (Jezreel), with its white castle, is easily distinguished.  On the left rises Jebel Duby (Little Hermon), and on the right are the mountains of Gilboa.

A seller of lanterns.  In houses provided with latticed windows only, candles are usually sheltered by lanterns like those suspended above.  One such lantern, with two or three wax candles in it, placed on the ground or on a low stool in a central position, is considered sufficient to light a large saloon.

Sometimes a slave is tied up by the wrists, while the ancles are fastened to a staple in the floor. In this position, they are punished with the whip or with the paddle. This is an instrument of torture bored full of holes, each hole raising a blister.
