Nathaniel Hawthorne was an American novelist, dark romantic, and short story writer of the 19th century. He is best known for his novels "The Scarlet Letter" (1850) and "The House of Seven Gables" (1851), and for a collection of short stories called "Twice-Told Tales" (1837).
